AMERICAN HINDU COALITION SUBMITS AMICUS BRIEF IN THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT SUPPORTING RELIGIOUS LIBERTY FOR ALL FAITH COMMUNITIES

WASHINGTON, DC – MARCH 3, 2023. This week, American
Hindu Coalition (AHC) represented by Wilmer Hale, a prominent
Washington, DC law firm, submitted an amicus brief in the U.S.
Supreme Court in favor of Gerald Groff, the plaintiff, against the
US Postal Service (USPS), the defendant. Mr. Groff, a federal
government employee, sued USPS, his employer, for Sundays off
to attend Church service, a customary practice of his Christian
faith. The lawsuit was initiated when USPS contracted with
Amazon to deliver packages on Sundays and denied Mr. Groff’s request to have Sundays off. Mr. Groff
was further disciplined for attending Church service instead of reporting to work. A Direct Link to the
Supreme Court Brief is provided here:

Noting that the AHC membership represents a significant population of Federal Government employees,
including the USPS, and also noting that AHC members’ Hindu, Buddhist, and Sikh religious customs
and practices, being minority faiths, may not be widely understood by mainstream America, the Wilmer
Hale attorneys explained: “As written, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 affirmatively protects
against workplace discrimination on the basis of religious practice and requires employers to
accommodate workers’ need for time off or other arrangements required by their religion. But courts have
gone off course and sapped the law of its force.”
The attorneys further added: “On behalf of our client, American Hindu Coalition, we argued that the
Supreme Court needs to correct the law’s interpretation so that Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains,
together with other religious Americans, need not choose between practicing their faith and providing for
their families.”
